Sales Training for Small Businesses

Why Most Small Businesses Struggle With Sales (And How to Fix It)

In my 17 years training sales teams, the biggest mistake I see small business owners make is that they think sales should feel natural and that that should just automatically flow into the business.

So they “wing it.”

No structure. No system. Just hope the conversations and marketing that they are doing magically leads to more sales.

And when it doesn’t?

They assume they’re bad at sales or they turn up their marketing activities. .

What is really happening though, is that most small businesses don’t have a sales problem.

They have a sales process problem.

I am Maree Kirkpatrick, Sales Trainer for Small Business Owners

I’ve spent the last 17 years training sales teams and coaching service-based businesses to build simple, repeatable sales systems.

Not sleazy scripts.
Not pressure tactics.
Not “bro marketing”.

Just real conversations that convert and systems that make selling easy.

Through my work with coaches, consultants, and professional service businesses, I help build sales processes that not only feel natural… but actually work.

I have always come from a place where sales is just a conversation.

But it’s a conversation that needs structure.

The Sales Challenges Small Business Owners Face

If you’re running a small business, you’re probably wearing twelve hats already.

Sales becomes the thing you squeeze in between everything else or we hope show up while we are busy doing everything else.

And that’s where things start to fall apart.

Here are the most common challenges I see.

1. No Clear Sales Process

Most small businesses are completely winging their sales processes.

They may have referrals, DMs, discovery calls, enquiries coming in… but there’s no clear path on how we convert them.

Which means every sales conversation feels different. There is no step by step sales process that we take our enquiries through which then can lead to inconsistent sales which then can create inconsistent revenue. Cashflow rollercoaster anyone?

2. Selling Feels Pushy or Awkward

Many service-based businesses are incredible at their craft…

But they’ve never actually been taught or learnt how to sell. So when it’s time to talk about money, pricing or next steps, the conversation becomes awkward.

They pull back. They soften their language. They become nervous. They hope the client decides on their own and throws money at them.

Spoiler alert…

They usually don’t.

3. Messaging That Doesn’t Connect

Another big issue I see is that business owners talk in a completely different language to their ideal clients or they are all about their services from their perspective, not the client’s.

They explain their process, their frameworks, their methods, they use jargon that their ideal clients do not connect with.

So the client is sitting there thinking…“Okay… but how does this help me?”

When messaging misses the real problem,l anguage and connection, sales conversations stall.

4. Plateaued Revenue

I see this happen regularly for established business owners. They struggle to get their revenue to continuously increase.

They’ve hit $10k… $15k… sometimes $20k months.

Growth stops. Not because the offer is bad or that they aren't doing enough marketing, but because the sales system doesn’t scale.

What Effective Sales Training for Small Businesses Actually Delivers

When small business owners learn how to sell properly, everything changes and the business has the foundations to grow.

Here’s what a strong sales system creates:

  • Predictable Sales Process

Instead of guessing your way through your sales process, you know exactly how the to convert the enquiries coming in.

You understand how to:

  • uncover the real problem
  • position your offer clearly
  • guide the decision confidently

Sales stops feeling chaotic and unpredictable. It becomes a process.

  • Higher Conversion Rates

When your sales process and messaging speaks directly to your client’s problem, the conversation shifts.

Instead of convincing people… You’re confirming alignment and that you are the best option for them.

  • Shorter Sales Cycles

One of the biggest benefits of structured sales training is speed.

Clear messaging + clear process = faster decisions and shorter sales cycles.

No endless “let me think about it” loops or heavy follow up needed.

  • Consistent Revenue Growth

When your sales conversations improve, revenue becomes predictable.

And predictable revenue gives you something small business owners rarely have…

Breathing room and security.

What Sales Training Should Look Like for Small Businesses

Sales training for small businesses shouldn’t feel corporate. It should be something that you and your team enjoy as research shows when people are having fun and are more engaged, they will retain a lot more of the information.

You don’t need call centre robotic scripts or aggressive closing tactics. No one wants that, as that is where the ick factor comes in.

You need something practical, connected, fun and engaging that allows you to be exactly who you are, with some guidance and structure to take your potential clients through.

A structure that fits into the way your business actually wants to represent.

The best training focuses on three things:

1. Client-Focused Messaging

Your messaging needs to speak directly to the problems your client is experiencing.

Not your process.
Not your methodology.
Their problem.

When that shift happens, sales conversations and connection become dramatically easier.

2. A Simple Sales Framework

Sales doesn’t need to be complicated.

In fact, the best systems are usually 7 steps.

  1. Connection and Rapport
  2. Discover and Uncover what is happening for your potential client
  3. The bridge that explains how your services will take them from where they are, to where they want to be.
  4. Pricing and investment
  5. Asking for the sale and inviting them to work with you
  6. Answering any questions or objections
  7. Onboarding and welcoming them into your business.

Simple.

Clear.

Repeatable.

3. Confidence in the Conversation

The biggest transformation I see in my clients isn’t just revenue.

It’s confidence. When you know how your sales process and sales conversations flow, you stop second-guessing yourself.

You stop over-explaining.

You stop apologising or hesitating with your price and your potential clients feel that shift immediately.

What is sales training for small businesses?

Sales training helps small business owners learn how to structure sales conversations, communicate their value clearly, and guide potential clients toward confident decisions.

Why do small businesses struggle with sales?

Most businesses and teams are experts in their field but have never been trained in sales. Without a clear process, conversations become inconsistent and revenue becomes unpredictable.

Do small businesses really need sales training?

Yes. Even experienced business owners often rely on referrals or informal conversations rather than a repeatable sales system. Continuous training helps turn sales into a predictable process.

How long does it take to improve sales results?

Many business owners see improvements within weeks once they adjust their messaging and implement a structured sales conversation framework.
